INFRASTRUCTURE VICTORIA BACKS THREE-PHASE POWER PLAN
Food and Fibre Great South Coast welcomes Infrastructure Victoria’s recommendation to upgrade the Great South Coast’s Tyrendarra, Strathdownie, Cape Bridegwater and Gorae West from single phase electricity lines to three-phase power.
In its 30-year infrastructure strategy released on Thursday, Infrastructure Victoria clearly acknowledged the need to invest in better connecting our regions. The strategy calls on the Victorian Government to help fund power supply infrastructure upgrades for agriculture and industry in regional Victoria where an independent assessment demonstrates significant benefit to existing users and potential to unlock investment.
Three-phase power means 21st century energy security that cities take for granted. It puts airconditioning in primary schools, enables our food and fibre sector to compete in a high-tech marketplace that values sustainability, and means the Great South Coast can take advantage of the renewable energy future in our backyard.
Food and Fibre Great South Coast looks forward to working closely with the Minister for Environment, Energy and Climate Change, Lily D’Ambrosio MP, the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) and the broader Victorian Government to deliver these critical upgrades.
Food and Fibre Great South Coast Chair, Georgina Gubbins, said “This recommendation from Infrastructure Victoria is a big step in the right direction for our region and its 1100 food and fibre businesses. The Great South Coast’s $2.3bn food and fibre industry stands ready to deliver these important upgrades with the Victorian Government.”
Food and Fibre Great South Coast Executive Officer, Natalie Collard, said “We are thrilled to see Infrastructure Victoria prioritise bringing our regions into the 21st century. Modern energy infrastructure will give our food and fibre businesses the edge to compete and embed resilience into our communities.
It is entirely appropriate that the Victorian Government invest in these upgrades. We have submitted an investment proposal to government and look forward to working together to make this upgrade a reality.”
Tyendarra Dairy Famer, Bruce Knowles, said “We are an innovative and forward-thinking region that cares about sustainability, job creation and best practice. We are the economic backbone of Victoria through our food and fibre success, and three phase power will enable us to create prosperity for our region as a whole”
In January 2021, Food and Fibre Great South Coast amassed 95 letters of support for its plan to upgrade the region to three phase power ahead of a submission to the Australian Energy Regulator. In February 2021, Food and Fibre Great South Coast recommended that Infrastructure Victoria include strategic power upgrades in its 30 year plan.
