Natural Resource Preparedness to Improve Drought Resilience

Overview

Climate change will increase the frequency, severity and duration of drought in south-west Victoria. In response investigations were undertaken into Natural Resource Preparedness to Improve Drought Resilience in the Great South Coast and Barwon Regions, and this report presents the key findings and recommendations.

The aim of this project is to better understand where to build the preparedness and resilience of natural resources (soil, water, and biodiversity) in the Great South Coast and Barwon regions through proactive, ongoing management of areas at high risk from drought or dry conditions. This approach seeks to protect the environment, sustain farm productivity, and prepare the landscape for a changing climate.

Therefore, the purpose of the project was to:

  • Analyse existing data and reports to identify initial high-risk natural resources to drought

  • Engage with Glenelg Hopkins and Corangamite Catchment Management Authorities (CMAs) to inform and validate a synthesis of high-risk natural resources

  • Develop a synthesis report, that identifies high-risk natural resources to drought, including recommendations for further work and investigation.

The initiative delivers on one of four key activity areas in the Regional Drought Resilience Implementation Plan for both regions and is being led by Food and Fibre Great South Coast (FFGSC).

This project of the Regional Drought Resilience Planning program received funding from the Australian Governmentโ€™s Future Drought Fund and the Victorian Government.
