Water Preparedness

Water Preparedness to Improve Drought Resilience

Overview

Climate change will increase the frequency, severity and duration of drought in south-west Victoria. In response investigations were undertaken into Water Preparedness to Improve Drought Resilience in the Great South Coast and Barwon Regions, and this report presents the key findings and recommendations.

This project aims to position the Great South Coast and Barwon regions of south-west Victoria to be better prepared for a future with less water, particularly over the next 10 to 15 years. The purpose of the project was to:

  • Review current and future priority regional water initiatives and existing infrastructure

  • Improve understanding and promote adoption of water conservation measures on-farm.

The initiative delivers on one of four key activity areas in the Regional Drought Resilience Implementation Plan for both regions, and is being led by Food and Fibre Great South Coast (FFGSC).

The findings of extensive engagement with farmers and irrigators, industry groups, government and service providers are included throughout the report, which complements significant desktop review, data analysis and modelling.

This project of the Regional Drought Resilience Planning program received funding from the Australian Governmentโ€™s Future Drought Fund and the Victorian Government.
